Ingredients

For the Dough:

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour, divided
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 1/4 tsp active dry yeast
  • 1 cup warm milk (110°F/45°C)
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/4 cup cocoa powder

For the Filling:

  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 2 tbsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 cup mini chocolate chips (optional)

For the Glaze:

  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 2-3 tbsp milk
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Dough:
    1. In a large mixing bowl, combine 2 cups of flour, sugar, and yeast.
    2. Add warm milk, melted butter, salt, and eggs. Mix until well combined.
    3. Gradually add the remaining flour, 1/2 cup at a time, until a soft dough forms.
    4. Divide the dough in half. Knead one half for about 5 minutes until smooth and elastic. This is your vanilla dough.
    5. For the chocolate dough, mix the cocoa powder with a small amount of warm water to form a paste, then knead into the remaining half of the dough for about 5 minutes until well incorporated and smooth.
  2. First Rise:
    1. Place each dough ball in a greased bowl, cover with a clean kitchen towel, and let rise in a warm place for about 1-2 hours or until doubled in size.
  3. Shape the Rolls:
    1. Roll out each dough ball into a rectangle (approximately 12×16 inches).
    2. Spread half of the softened butter on each rectangle, then sprinkle with brown sugar and cinnamon. If using, sprinkle the chocolate chips evenly over the chocolate dough.
    3. Carefully place the chocolate dough rectangle on top of the vanilla dough rectangle.
    4. Starting from the long edge, tightly roll up the dough into a log.
  4. Cut and Arrange:
    1. Using a sharp knife, cut the log into 12-15 rolls.
    2. Place the rolls in a greased baking dish, leaving a little space between each roll.
    3. Cover with a towel and let rise for another 30-45 minutes until puffed up.
  5. Bake:
    1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
    2. Bake the rolls for 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown and cooked through.
  6. Prepare the Glaze:
    1. In a small bowl, whisk together powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract until smooth.
    2. Drizzle the glaze over the warm rolls.

Enjoy your delicious Two-Tone Sweet Rolls! Perfect with a cup of coffee or tea.
