- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 2 1/4 tsp active dry yeast
- 1 cup warm milk (110°F/45°C)
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
- 1 tsp salt
- 2 large eggs
- 1/4 cup cocoa powder
For the Filling:
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 2 tbsp ground cinnamon
- 1/4 cup mini chocolate chips (optional)
For the Glaze:
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- 2-3 tbsp milk
- 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
Instructions
- Prepare the Dough:
- In a large mixing bowl, combine 2 cups of flour, sugar, and yeast.
- Add warm milk, melted butter, salt, and eggs. Mix until well combined.
- Gradually add the remaining flour, 1/2 cup at a time, until a soft dough forms.
- Divide the dough in half. Knead one half for about 5 minutes until smooth and elastic. This is your vanilla dough.
- For the chocolate dough, mix the cocoa powder with a small amount of warm water to form a paste, then knead into the remaining half of the dough for about 5 minutes until well incorporated and smooth.
- First Rise:
- Place each dough ball in a greased bowl, cover with a clean kitchen towel, and let rise in a warm place for about 1-2 hours or until doubled in size.
- Shape the Rolls:
- Roll out each dough ball into a rectangle (approximately 12×16 inches).
- Spread half of the softened butter on each rectangle, then sprinkle with brown sugar and cinnamon. If using, sprinkle the chocolate chips evenly over the chocolate dough.
- Carefully place the chocolate dough rectangle on top of the vanilla dough rectangle.
- Starting from the long edge, tightly roll up the dough into a log.
- Cut and Arrange:
- Using a sharp knife, cut the log into 12-15 rolls.
- Place the rolls in a greased baking dish, leaving a little space between each roll.
- Cover with a towel and let rise for another 30-45 minutes until puffed up.
- Bake:
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Bake the rolls for 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown and cooked through.
- Prepare the Glaze:
- In a small bowl, whisk together powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract until smooth.
- Drizzle the glaze over the warm rolls.
Enjoy your delicious Two-Tone Sweet Rolls! Perfect with a cup of coffee or tea.
