Ingredients

  • For the Salisbury Steaks:
    • 1 pound ground beef (90% lean)
    • 1/2 onion, finely diced
    • 1 garlic clove, minced
    • 1/3 cup panko breadcrumbs
    • 1 large egg
    • 1 ½ teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
    • 2 teaspoons mayonnaise
    • 1 teaspoon sea salt
    • ½ teaspoon black pepper
    • 1 ½ teaspoons Italian seasoning
    • 1 tablespoon ketchup
    • 1 ½ teaspoons milk (whole milk or any kind)
    • 2 teaspoons Dijon mustard
    • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • For the Mushroom Gravy:
    • 2 tablespoons butter
    • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
    • 1 ½ cups beef broth
    • 1 tablespoon ketchup
    • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
    • ½ teaspoon onion powder
    • 8 ounces sliced mushrooms
    • Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Salisbury Steaks: In a large bowl, combine ground beef, diced onion, minced garlic, panko breadcrumbs, egg, Worcestershire sauce, mayonnaise, salt, pepper, Italian seasoning, ketchup, milk, and Dijon mustard. Mix gently with your hands until just combined. Be careful not to overmix.
  2. Shape the meat mixture into 4 equal patties, each about ¾ inch thick.
  3. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Once hot, carefully add the Salisbury steaks and cook for 4-5 minutes per side, or until browned.
  4. Make the Gravy: Remove the cooked steaks from the pan and set aside on a plate.
  5. In the same skillet, melt butter over medium heat. Whisk in flour and cook for 1 minute, stirring constantly.
  6. Slowly whisk in beef broth, scraping up any browned bits from the bottom of the pan. Bring to a simmer and cook for 2-3 minutes, or until thickened.
  7. Stir in ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, and onion powder. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  8. Add sliced mushrooms to the gravy and cook for an additional 2-3 minutes, or until softened.
  9. Assemble and Serve: Return the cooked Salisbury steaks to the pan with the gravy. Spoon the gravy over the steaks and simmer for a further minute or two to heat through.
  10. Serve immediately with mashed potatoes, roasted vegetables, or your favorite sides.
