Ingredients

For the Meatballs:

  • 1 lb (450g) ground beef
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp Dijon mustard
  • 1 tsp dried parsley
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 2 tbsp olive oil (for frying)

For the Gravy:

  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1 cup mushrooms, sliced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp Dijon mustard
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Meatballs:
  • In a large bowl, combine the breadcrumbs and milk. Let it sit for a few minutes until the breadcrumbs absorb the milk.
  • Add the ground beef, egg, chopped onion, minced garlic, Worcestershire sauce, Dijon mustard, dried parsley, salt, and black pepper to the breadcrumb mixture. Mix until just combined.
  • Shape the mixture into meatballs, about 1 to 1.5 inches in diameter.
  1. Cook the Meatballs:
  • Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat.
  • Add the meatballs to the skillet and cook until browned on all sides. This should take about 5-7 minutes. (The meatballs do not need to be fully cooked at this stage as they will finish cooking in the gravy.)
  • Remove the meatballs from the skillet and set aside.
  1. Make the Gravy:
  • In the same skillet, melt the butter over medium heat.
  • Add the chopped onion and cook until softened, about 3-4 minutes.
  • Add the sliced mushrooms and cook until they release their moisture and start to brown, about 5 minutes.
  • Add the minced garlic and cook for another 1 minute until fragrant.
  • Sprinkle the flour over the mushroom mixture and stir to combine. Cook for 1-2 minutes to remove the raw flour taste.
  • Gradually whisk in the beef broth, ensuring there are no lumps.
  • Stir in the Worcestershire sauce and Dijon mustard. Bring the mixture to a simmer and let it thicken, about 5 minutes.
  • Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  1. Combine and Simmer:
  • Return the meatballs to the skillet, making sure they are coated in the gravy.
  • Reduce the heat to low, cover, and simmer for 15-20 minutes until the meatballs are cooked through and the gravy has thickened.
  1. Serve:
  • Garnish with freshly chopped parsley.
  • Serve the Salisbury steak meatballs over mashed potatoes, rice, or egg noodles.
