Ingredients
For the Meatballs:
- 1 lb (450g) ground beef
- 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
- 1/4 cup milk
- 1 large egg
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tsp Dijon mustard
- 1 tsp dried parsley
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp black pepper
- 2 tbsp olive oil (for frying)
For the Gravy:
- 2 tbsp butter
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 1 cup mushrooms, sliced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
- 2 cups beef broth
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tsp Dijon mustard
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)
Instructions
- Prepare the Meatballs:
- In a large bowl, combine the breadcrumbs and milk. Let it sit for a few minutes until the breadcrumbs absorb the milk.
- Add the ground beef, egg, chopped onion, minced garlic, Worcestershire sauce, Dijon mustard, dried parsley, salt, and black pepper to the breadcrumb mixture. Mix until just combined.
- Shape the mixture into meatballs, about 1 to 1.5 inches in diameter.
- Cook the Meatballs:
- Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat.
- Add the meatballs to the skillet and cook until browned on all sides. This should take about 5-7 minutes. (The meatballs do not need to be fully cooked at this stage as they will finish cooking in the gravy.)
- Remove the meatballs from the skillet and set aside.
- Make the Gravy:
- In the same skillet, melt the butter over medium heat.
- Add the chopped onion and cook until softened, about 3-4 minutes.
- Add the sliced mushrooms and cook until they release their moisture and start to brown, about 5 minutes.
- Add the minced garlic and cook for another 1 minute until fragrant.
- Sprinkle the flour over the mushroom mixture and stir to combine. Cook for 1-2 minutes to remove the raw flour taste.
- Gradually whisk in the beef broth, ensuring there are no lumps.
- Stir in the Worcestershire sauce and Dijon mustard. Bring the mixture to a simmer and let it thicken, about 5 minutes.
- Season with salt and pepper to taste.
- Combine and Simmer:
- Return the meatballs to the skillet, making sure they are coated in the gravy.
- Reduce the heat to low, cover, and simmer for 15-20 minutes until the meatballs are cooked through and the gravy has thickened.
- Serve:
- Garnish with freshly chopped parsley.
- Serve the Salisbury steak meatballs over mashed potatoes, rice, or egg noodles.
