This easy skillet bread is a delightful addition to any meal. With a crispy crust and soft, fluffy interior, it’s perfect for dipping in soups, enjoying with a pat of butter, or using as a base for sandwiches. Best of all, you don’t need any special equipment – just a skillet and a few basic ingredients.
Ingredients
- 2 cups (240g) all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon baking powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 tablespoon sugar (optional, for a hint of sweetness)
- 1 cup (240ml) milk (room temperature)
- 2 tablespoons olive oil (plus more for the skillet)
- 1 tablespoon melted butter (for brushing, optional)
- Herbs and spices (optional, such as rosemary, thyme, or garlic powder for extra flavor)
Instructions
- Preheat the Skillet:
- Place a cast-iron or oven-safe skillet in the oven.
- Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C). The skillet should be heated with the oven.
- Mix the Dry Ingredients:
- In a large bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar (if using). Mix well to ensure even distribution.
- Add Wet Ingredients:
- Make a well in the center of the dry ingredients and pour in the milk and olive oil.
- Stir until the mixture comes together into a sticky dough. Do not overmix; it’s okay if it’s a little lumpy.
- Prepare the Skillet:
- Carefully remove the hot skillet from the oven using oven mitts.
- Add a drizzle of olive oil to the skillet and swirl to coat the bottom and sides.
- Shape and Bake the Dough:
- Transfer the dough to the prepared skillet and spread it out evenly.
- If desired, brush the top with melted butter and sprinkle with your choice of herbs and spices.
- Bake:
- Place the skillet in the preheated oven and bake for 20-25 minutes, or until the bread is golden brown and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
- Cool and Serve:
- Remove the skillet from the oven and let the bread cool for a few minutes.
- Carefully transfer the bread to a wire rack to cool slightly before slicing.
- Enjoy:
- Serve warm with butter, or use it as a side for your favorite dishes. Enjoy!
