Chinese Sweet and Sour Chicken RECIPE
A classic Chinese dish featuring crispy chicken pieces coated in a flavorful sweet and sour sauce with colorful vegetables.
Ingredients
- For the Chicken:
- 1 lb chicken breast or thighs, cut into bite-sized pieces
- 1/2 cup cornstarch
- 2 eggs, beaten
- 1 cup flour
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp black pepper
- Vegetable oil for frying
- For the Sweet and Sour Sauce:
- 1/2 cup rice vinegar
- 1/2 cup ketchup
- 1/4 cup soy sauce
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 1/4 cup pineapple juice
- 1 tbsp cornstarch mixed with 2 tbsp water (for thickening)
- For the Vegetables:
- 1 red bell pepper, cut into chunks
- 1 green bell pepper, cut into chunks
- 1 yellow bell pepper, cut into chunks
- 1 medium onion, cut into chunks
- 1 cup pineapple chunks (fresh or canned)
Instructions
- Prepare the Chicken:
- Season the chicken pieces with salt and pepper.
- Dredge each piece in flour, then dip into beaten eggs, and finally coat with cornstarch.
- Heat vegetable oil in a deep pan or wok over medium-high heat. Fry the chicken pieces until golden and crispy. Drain on paper towels and set aside.
- Make the Sweet and Sour Sauce:
- In a saucepan, combine rice vinegar, ketchup, soy sauce, brown sugar, and pineapple juice. Bring to a boil over medium heat.
- Stir in the cornstarch mixture and cook until the sauce thickens. Remove from heat and set aside.
- Cook the Vegetables:
- In a large wok or skillet, heat a small amount of oil over medium-high heat.
- Add the onion and bell peppers. Stir-fry for 2-3 minutes until slightly tender but still crisp.
- Add the pineapple chunks and stir-fry for another minute.
- Combine and Serve:
- Add the fried chicken pieces to the wok with the vegetables.
- Pour the sweet and sour sauce over the chicken and vegetables. Toss everything together until well coated and heated through.
- Serve immediately with steamed rice or noodles.
