Ingredients

For the Cake:

  • 1 box vanilla cake mix (plus ingredients required on the box)
  • 1 cup milk

For the Vanilla Custard:

  • 1 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 3 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

For the Chocolate Ganache:

  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Cake:
  • Preheat your oven according to the vanilla cake mix instructions.
  • Grease and flour a 9×13-inch baking pan.
  • Prepare the vanilla cake mix according to the package instructions, substituting 1 cup of milk for water.
  • Pour the batter into the prepared pan and bake as directed on the package. Let the cake cool completely.
  1. Make the Vanilla Custard:
  • In a medium saucepan, combine 1 cup of milk, granulated sugar, cornstarch, and salt.
  • Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until the mixture begins to thicken and comes to a boil. Continue to cook for an additional 1-2 minutes.
  • Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla extract. Allow the custard to cool slightly.
  1. Assemble the Cake:
  • Once the cake is completely cool, use the handle of a wooden spoon to poke holes all over the cake, about 1 inch apart.
  • Pour the vanilla custard evenly over the cake, making sure it fills the holes.
  1. Make the Chocolate Ganache:
  • In a small saucepan, heat the heavy cream over medium heat until it begins to simmer.
  • Remove from heat and add the chocolate chips. Stir until smooth and the chocolate is completely melted.
  1. Top the Cake:
  • Pour the chocolate ganache evenly over the top of the cake, spreading it gently to cover the entire surface.
  1. Chill and Serve:
  • Refrigerate the cake for at least 2 hours before serving to allow the custard to set and the ganache to firm up.
  • Cut into squares and serve chilled.
